Cake Bread Cellars Logo Grapes

What began with Jack and Dolores Cakebread’s original purchase of 22 acres in Rutherford, is now 1,600 family-owned acres across Napa Valley and Anderson Valley with 600 acres planted to vine. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is represented by an array of cooler and warmer sites along both the valley floor and steep hillsides. Each site lends a distinct personality, offering tremendous diversity, complexity and unparalleled quality.

Four unique vineyard sites are the sources for Cakebread’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve wines which provide a taste of the breadth of Napa Valley. From the benchlands of the Mayacamas Mountains to the steep slopes of Howell Mountain, these wines embody the terroir of the Napa Valley. Our estate vineyards comprise of different elevations, soil types, micro climates, among other features, that make each wine unique. Winemaking is both an art and a science, and Stephanie, our director of winemaking, speaks through these wines. She crafts the different cabernets with the ideal expression of each vineyard, bringing into harmony the fruit, acid and tannins. From the forest floor notes in our Dancing Bear Ranch to the hint of floral in Suscol Springs, each are nuanced, layered and complex. All have a common thread, balance.

THE WINES

DANCING BEAR RANCH - HOWELL MOUNTAIN
DANCING BEAR RANCH
VARIETAL MIX
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
AGING
22 months, 60% new French oak
MICRO-CLIMATE & TERROIR Warm sunshine during the day and cool nights allow the grapes to develop intense color and flavor while retaining acidic structure and aromatic depth. Iron rich, volcanic soils force the vines to produce small intense grapes which translates into powerful concentrated wines.
TASTING NOTES Dense, concentrated dark fruits, dried herbs, fig, blackberry, forest floor, opulent tannins, hint of minerality
Hill Ranch - Rutherford
HILL RANCH - RUTHERFORD
VARIETAL MIX
Cabernet Sauvignon
AGING
22 months, 60% new French oak
MICRO-CLIMATE & TERROIR Tucked next to the Mayacamas mountains, Hill Ranch sits on the alluvial fans, comprised of fertile, sloping soil deposit run-off from the mountains that drain well yet retain water in the root zone. Hill Ranch gets morning sun, protected by mountain shade in afternoon. The result is smaller, more concentrated grapes that ripen slowly and evenly.
TASTING NOTES Black fruit, ripe blackberry and black cherry, mocha (Rutherford dust) finish, round, elegant tannins, long finish
Suscol Springs Cabernet Sauvignon
SUSCOL SPRINGS
VARIETAL MIX
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
AGING
22 months, 70% new French oak
MICRO-CLIMATE & TERROIR Located at the southeastern end of Napa Valley, Suscol Springs is a much cooler site, receiving more of maritime winds coming from the San Pablo bay. There is smaller difference between day and evening temperatures. Along with rocky soils, the vines struggle to ripen resulting in concentrated flavor with bright acidity.
TASTING NOTES Dense, concentrated dark fruits, dried herbs, fig, blackberry, forest floor, opulent tannins, hint of minerality
Dogwood Ranch
DOGGWOOD RANCH
VARIETAL MIX
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
AGING
22 months, 58% new French oak
MICRO-CLIMATE & TERROIR This wine showcases the range of our Vaca mountain vineyard sites. The combination of these mountain sites with high elevation and thin, rocky soils naturally limit the vine productivity. The small clusters have a high skin to juice ration which translates into deep color, intense flavor, and structured tannins.
TASTING NOTES Suscol Springs provides bright acidity and floral highlights while Doggwood adds deep, dark fruit flavors. A touch of Dancing Bear Ranch adds robust fig and blackberry notes. This blend is balanced with structured tannins and a round, silky finish.
